How Many Agreements Are Made under Earth Summit

At the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, representatives from 178 countries gathered to discuss some of the most pressing environmental issues facing the world. This historic summit resulted in the creation of several important agreements that continue to shape global environmental policy even today.

The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development was one of the most significant agreements to come out of the summit. This document laid out 27 principles that guide environmental decision-making and promote sustainable development. Some of the key principles included in the Rio Declaration are: promoting a precautionary approach to environmental decision-making, ensuring access to information and public participation in environmental decision-making, and recognizing that economic development and environmental protection are interdependent.

Another important agreement that was made at the Earth Summit was the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This treaty aimed to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere in order to prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. The UNFCCC has since been ratified by 197 countries and continues to be the main international treaty governing climate change.

The Earth Summit also gave birth to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which aimed to promote the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. This treaty, which has been ratified by 196 countries, has played a crucial role in protecting biodiversity around the world.

In addition to these major agreements, the Earth Summit also resulted in the adoption of Agenda 21, a comprehensive plan of action to promote sustainable development. Agenda 21 addresses a wide range of environmental and social issues, from improving access to clean water to promoting sustainable agriculture practices.

Overall, the Earth Summit was a landmark event that resulted in some of the most important environmental agreements in history. These agreements continue to guide environmental policy around the world and serve as a reminder of the urgent need for collective action to address global environmental issues.
