How to Be a Lawyer Abroad

If you studied law outside the UK but have not yet started practising law, you can take the Postgraduate Diploma in Law or the Law Conversion Course and join non-legal graduates in the traditional UK way of becoming a lawyer. Indeed, the SRA does not recognize the majority of foreign legal degrees as eligible legal degrees. However, if you are a lawyer practising abroad, you may need to apply for the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS). For those of you who are curious to perhaps study law school abroad rather than in the United States, you should note that a person who wants to study law should do so in the country where they want to work. The specificity of the legal system in each country makes it difficult for lawyers to study law abroad and return home and practice in their home country – or vice versa. But a few have persevered and managed to build long, rewarding careers abroad. ABA Journal recently met with four U.S. lawyers, each of whom has lived and worked abroad for more than 20 years. A career in education might appeal to lawyers, as these careers can offer opportunities without the need for validation or certification. A big part of that is the ever-changing business world. The globalization of the economy has changed the way law firms and lawyers operate and the business model they apply. The need for lawyers with international expertise who have experience in the type of work we have identified above continues to grow. On the other hand, it has also led to a huge growth in the number of young lawyers around the world. Ambitious lawyers who want to learn the trade need to find ways to stand out from the crowd. One of the best ways to do this is to develop your profile as an international lawyer. As the securities market is volatile, many London firms have supplemented their securities work by having US lawyers work on international financial transactions. Much of this work has shielded London businesses from the slowdown in financial markets, which is generally quite cyclical.
